A year ago, two young women with an idea came together to form what is present day Vizo’s Voice. Jewel Dotson and Alondra Alvizo were having a conversation about the lack of media coverage for artists of color and the desire to create an artistic platform that served communities of color. We decided to allow this idea to flourish into a YouTube channel that would allow our own artistic creativity to bloom while also creating a space for any talented individual to showcase their craft. Jewel and Alondra are extremely driven women with a passion for community service with a talent for diverse arts. Jewel is at her most natural state with a camera in hand while Alondra is a poetic conversationalist. Through this platform, they wanted to serve a broad audience without dismissing their individual needs for a creative outlet. Both women came together to provide three educating and artistic videos a week on diverse topics.

Individually, Jewel has been able to build a diverse portfolio through her work in Vizo’s Voice while Alondra has been able to document the growth in her poetry through the weekly Free Verse Friday videos. However, Vizo’s Voice is also geared toward serving the collective. Within a year of operation, Vizo’s Voice has published over a 100 videos, has organized and led programs on politics, provided a $100 scholarship to an upcoming lyricist (rapper), raised over $500.00 for disaster relief and partnered with communities of color to best address the most prominent issues we see. More recently, we have added two more individuals to our team, Desiree Bennett, our Social Media Coordinator, Xavier Cuevas, our official Event Photographer.

We recently raised over $500.00 for the Coastal Bend Food Bank Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund in collaboration with another local organization, Coast Guard LLC.
